Germination Tips: Cold stratification recommended before sowing

We planted these along the back edge of our property, and they’ve blended right into the landscape. Perfect for a more natural-style garden. Can’t wait for full berries next year.
Germination took a few weeks with stratification, but the seedlings came up healthy and strong. Planted outdoors in spring and they’re already over a foot tall. Great quality.
Elderberries aren’t fast growers from seed, but if you’ve got the patience, it’s rewarding. I’ve used some of the first berries for syrup and tea—flavor is rich and earthy.
I live in zone 5 and was worried these wouldn’t survive the winter, but they came back even stronger in spring. The foliage is lush, and I’m seeing the first signs of flowering now.
These elderberries brought in a ton of bees and butterflies once they bloomed. I haven’t harvested fruit yet, but the plants are healthy and establishing well in my back field.
