I did a 90-day cold stratification and had excellent germination results. The seedlings are strong and adapting well to my garden. Can’t wait to see the mature shrubs in bloom.
I planted these near my back fence and they’ve become a favorite of birds. The red berries pop in summer and the plant itself is very low maintenance. Would recommend for hedgerows.
Even before the berries formed, the flower clusters brought in bees and butterflies like crazy. A perfect plant for adding habitat and visual interest to a native garden.
I was impressed by how well these handled dappled sunlight. The seedlings were slow at first but really took off by mid-summer. Hoping to have a nice elder thicket in a year or two.
The red elderberries are more ornamental than edible unless properly cooked, but they look fantastic in a woodland garden. The birds love them and the leaves turn a lovely shade in fall.
